Akshata Murty has been claiming non-dom status and was not paying UK tax on her foreign income. She has now said that she will no longer apply to pay tax on a remittance basis. Whilst this means that she will pay tax on her foreign income, what does this mean for her and her husband?
In order to claim the remittance basis and save tax on foreign income, Ms Murty must assert that she has not acquired a domicile in the UK i.e. she is not in the UK on a permanent or indefinite basis. Furthermore, whilst Ms Murty has said that she would no longer apply for the remittance basis, she has not said that she is domiciled in the UK and intends to remain in the UK for more than a temporary basis.
Such an assertion is bound to have repercussions for Rishi Sunak. What does this mean for him and his family? Is the plan for them to stay in the UK for 5-10 years and then move to India? Or is it for Ms Murty to return to India without Rishi Sunak? If so, what is the plan for their children? It seems difficult to believe that Rishi Sunak is planning to remain in the UK without his wife and children, so does he intend to leave the UK on a permanent basis and if so, what are the repercussions for his political career?
